The creator and inspirer of the Turma da Mônica universe, Mauricio de Sousa and his daughter, were the first guests of the special series

To celebrate Monica’s 60th birthday, Mauricio de Sousa Produções (MSP) released the first episode of #Monicast this Thursday 22, on the producer’s YouTube channel. the series of podcasts it will have 10 episodes and will have as presenters Fih and Edu, from Diva Depressão. In this first chapter, the creator and inspirer of the universe of Monica’s gang, Maurice de Sousa and Mônica, were the guests.

With the aim of answering who was the source of inspiration for the character and the entire universe surrounding the iconic Mônica, the cartoonist says he has always been inspired by his children. “I was lucky, because I had several children, each with a different characteristic. Do you think I invented something for Magali? I didn’t invent anything. the watermelons ran out at home. I was very lucky to have very creative children,” he said.

During the conversation, the cartoonist and his daughter Mônica recall the beginning of everything, from the first strip, in which Cebolinha was the protagonist and then when the little girl took over the narration, as recalled by Mauricio’s daughter and manager. When you remember the beginning, when the strips were published in the Morning sheetMaurício points out: “The strips in the paper belonged to Cebolinha, the owner of the space. Mônica arrived and won the space. Cebolinha is still trying to get it back.”

Throughout the podcast, Mônica says she always tried not to look too much like the character. Not believing it was possible for someone like Mônica to exist, she changed her mind when she became a mother. “I thought she overreacted until I had my daughter. She was three times worse than Mônica. She hit everybody, bit, hit,” she says.

The character’s introduction also arose from a request for more female characters in newspaper strips. Mauricio says he was even accused of misogyny by some journalists of the newspaper where he worked. “And I said, ‘What’s misogynistic?’ I knew it.” From that moment he begins to observe his daughters to create new female characters. “Children are very open, very realistic. They say what they have to say. When you want to write children’s stories, look at the children,” he stressed.
