TV Academy removes rule on suspended episodes with awards in 2023

The Emmys explain the suspended episodes rule, starting with the 2023 awards.

The television academy announced that its board of directors has approved a change recommended by its awards committee.

Policy currently allows the series to premiere episodes from the current season after the May 31 eligibility deadline, but before nominations are voted on on May 31, publish those episodes for Academy members to participate in the current Emmy competition on the platform. .

Next year, however, only episodes that premiere on the platform will be eligible for an Emmy, which will be available to domestic audiences starting May 31, 2023.

According to TV Academia, the change was made to standardize the presentation within the year allowed.

The Academy has also published the following rules for the admission of series and limited/anthological series, starting with the 2023 Emmy Competition.

TV Series

• The required number of episodes of the series must premiere by May 31 to be eligible for the current Emmy competition. (Six episodes are required for animated, comedy, drama, diversity, short form, and reality series. Documentary series and non-show series require three episodes.)
• If the series premieres during the current Emmy year, but does not have the required number of national premiere episodes to qualify for its category, the series, along with individual achievements, will qualify for the next Emmy competition.
• If a show qualifies for the current rating year, but has additional episodes after the current season premiere on May 31, those episodes will be eligible for an Emmy along with the show’s next season.
• If the series does not return to the next Emmy competition, these episodes will be allowed as separate “orphaned” episodes in the separate achievement category. Submission of a part of the work (including series and acting categories) in the form of “orphaned” episodes will not be allowed.

Limited series / anthology

• All episodes/parts of the anthology/limited series must be released nationally by May 31st to be eligible for the current Emmy competition.
• If all episodes/episodes do not premiere during the current rating year, the entire limited series, along with individual achievements, will compete in the next Emmy competition.
