Major events in the entertainment industry will be greatly impacted by the actors’ strike in Hollywood. Following the decision issued this Thursday (7/13) by the Actors Union (SAG-AFTRA), more than 160,000 actor members of the organization have been banned from working in productions and participating in promotional activities – such as the Comic-AFTRA panel, Con, Emmy Awards and premieres at film festivals such as Venice and Toronto.
Known for being the site of major studio announcements, San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), scheduled for next weekend, will be the first event affected by the strike. Cautiously, studios like Disney, Netflix, Warner, and Sony even announced in advance that they wouldn’t be participating this year. The organizers’ hopes of at least having the series began to crumble after the announcement of the hiatus, when panels of attractions such as “Good Omens”, “The Rookie” and “That ’90s Show” were canceled. Now, all audiovisual programming will be affected.
all paralysed
In addition to not being able to promote content at promotional events, actors will not be able to walk red carpets promoting productions and participate in interviews, including press conferences at festivals and podcasts.
The London premiere of the long-awaited “Oppenheimer”, directed by Christopher Nolan, was the first hit. Stars like Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr. and Cillian Murphy left the red carpet with the strike decree. The premiere of ‘Barbie’, which will debut next Thursday (20/7), will be the next interested, followed by the launches of other feature films in the coming weeks, such as ‘Besouro Azul’ and ‘Assassinos da Lua das Flores’. , without forgetting the Venice Film Festival, scheduled for August, and the Toronto Film Festival, in September.
With no actors in attendance, the Television Academy became the first organization to pull its event from the calendar, announcing that the Emmy Awards will be postponed to later this year or early 2024.
Under movement guidelines released by the union, member actors are also prohibited from acting, singing, dancing or working in any way. Voice-over and narration activities are also included. Negotiations for future projects or any form of ancillary work to productions are also on the list of prohibited activities.
Causes of the strike
The strike was confirmed after a failed negotiation attempt between SAG-AFTRA and the Film and Television Producers Alliance (AMPTP), which brings together major studios such as Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Warner, NBC Universal, Paramount and Sony. The organization said it had “no choice” but to call a strike.
The discussions began in June and were postponed until last Wednesday (7/12), a deadline by which the AMPTP must respond to the union’s requests. The demands included salary increases, clauses on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the production of films, series and programs for TV and streaming. But the main point of the actors’ requests is related to the changes in the entertainment industry caused by streaming. Actors ask for compensation to keep their performances on the platforms for years and years, as they already receive for reruns on TV and physical media (DVD and Blu-ray).
In the absence of a definitive response from the AMPTP, the union refused to extend the talks further beyond the set date. Therefore, the strike takes effect from 00 this Friday (14/7) and remains indefinite.
