Mohamed Al Fayed, former owner of the renowned Harrods department store and father of Dodi, who died in a car accident with Diana, Princess of Wales, has died at the age of 94.




In a statement released on Friday, Day 1, his family said, “Mohamed passed away peacefully of old age on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. He enjoyed a long and full retirement alongside his loved ones.”

Al Fayed was born in Egypt and built a business empire in the Middle East before moving to the UK in the 1970s. However, despite his best efforts, he was never able to obtain a British passport. The businessman has faced controversy in his bid to gain British citizenship and has brought charges against politicians, leading to resignations and lawsuits.

His life path is remarkable. From selling soft drinks on the streets of Alexandria, Egypt, Al Fayed has risen to become a big name in the industry. His big breakthrough came after marrying Samira Khashoggi, sister of Saudi millionaire Adnan Khashoggi. In 1974 he moved to Great Britain and, in 1985, bought Harrods for £615 million, equivalent to almost R$4 billion at today’s exchange rates.

Al Fayed sold Harrods to Qatar in 2010 but remained honorary chairman for six months. He also owned Fulham Football Club for many years. In tribute, the club said: “We owe Mohamed a debt of gratitude for what he has done for our club.”
