Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 60, was arrested Friday (September 29) in Las Vegas, accused of involvement in the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. Clark County Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo said that Davis was charged with murder. with a firearm. The arrest comes after decades of investigation and two months after a search of Davis’ home revealed new evidence.
Davis was one of the last living witnesses to the crime and had already admitted in his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend”, that he was in the car from which the shots that killed Tupac came. He also made similar statements in interviews and television programs, always presenting himself as a witness rather than a suspect.
In the book, he reported that he was in the white Cadillac that he matched with Tupac’s BMW on the night of September 7, 1996. Tupac was shot four times and died four days later. Davis, who belongs to the Crips gang and has already served 15 years in prison for drug trafficking, could now face the death penalty or life in prison.
He is being held without bail. Las Vegas police are expected to hold a news conference to provide more details about the arrest and new evidence.
Tupac’s legacy
Rapper Tupac Shakur sold more than 75 million records worldwide in a career that lasted just five years. He was the first solo hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
His death, like that of his rival Notorious Big, remains one of the most intriguing and theorized cases in hip-hop history. So far, neither murder has been solved.
