What is the difference between queen regnant, queen consort, queen mother and queen emerita?

This Sunday (14), Margaret II of Denmark signed her abdication after 52 years on the throne. With this, her eldest son, Frederik, became king. He is no longer monarch, however he will retain his title.

With the death of Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom in September 2022 and the resignation of Margrethe II, the planet was left without any reigning queen. All 43 active monarchies are led by men.

Queen regnant is one who occupies the throne by inheritance after inheriting it from her father or mother, either through the death or abdication of the monarch.

The title queen consort refers to the wife of a king. She can be noble (belonging to a royal house), aristocratic (coming from a traditional family with some connection to the royal family) or commoner (coming from the people), like the former journalist who became queen of Spain, Letizia Ortiz.

In some monarchies, the position of queen mother exists, occupied by the woman who gave birth to the reigning king or queen. In the United Kingdom, for example, after the death of her husband (George VI) and the automatic accession of her daughter Elizabeth II, the then Queen Consort Elizabeth (yes, they had the same name as her) became Queen Mother.

In Spain, after King Juan Carlos abdicated in favor of his son Filipe in 2014, Queen Consort Sofia assumed the title of Queen Emerita, i.e. retired queen, maintaining her status.

The same did not happen with Beatrice of the Netherlands. When she passed her throne to her son, Willem-Alexander, in 2013, she reverted to her previous title, Princess. Each royal house sets its own rules.

Only the man who inherits the crown from his father or mother receives the treatment of king. The husband of a reigning queen will never be more than a prince, as Philip, the companion of Queen Elizabeth II, was.
