Drag queen and two partners have founded an online bookstore to encourage LGBTQIA+ authors and stories, and will take the vehicle to several states
A rainbow bus to fight the repression of reading. This is one of the strategies for RuPaultelevision producer, presenter and drag queen more famous than WE – and perhaps the world – to react to attempts to ban drag books and shows in the American country, adopted by state politicians.
RuPaul has teamed up with two partners to create a new online bookstore, which will send a school bus across the United States and distribute 10,000 copies of the books targeted by these bans. Since most of these publications are written or talked about by people LGBTQIA+ and non-white characters. The information is from the newspaper The New York Times.
With the program RuPaul’s Drag Racewhich already has 16 seasons in the United States and more than a dozen editions around the world, including Brazil, RuPaul popularized the art of drag, which was already part of the artistic expressions of different cultures around the world.
The idea of the Allstora bookstore, as it is called, is to promote underrepresented authors and give them a larger share of the profits than other competitors in the segment. It was founded in a garage in 2022 under another name by Adam Powell, a drag performer, and his partner, Eric Cervini, author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated history book The war of the deviants: homosexuals vs. The United States of America (The War of the Deviants: Homosexuals X United States of America, in free translation).
Before RuPaul joined the company, where he served as creative director, the focus was on books written by LGBTQIA+ people. He now sells books from all types of authors and offers authors a share of the profits made from book sales on the site.
The trio then created the Rainbow Book Bus. It is a traditional American school bus, almost seven meters long, which will travel through states such as Alabama, Florida and Louisiana. There is legislation in these places that attempts to ban books considered unwanted by conservative and religious groups from schools and libraries.
As these book removal efforts grow across the United States, some libraries have received bomb threats and have even been shut down. Drag queen shows and access to healthcare for transgender people are also targets of these groups.
“I wasn’t very good at school, but I read books and watched television, and those are the ways I was able to find my way in this big world,” RuPaul told the American newspaper. He believes the new bookstore fills an important gap, especially “in these strange days we live in.”
