Today, July 8, Prince Richard, son of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1900-1974) and Alice née Montagu-Douglas-Scott (1901-2004), as well as the grandson of King George VI and cousin of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, and Birgitta , Duchess of Gloucester celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. On this occasion, a new photo of the spouses appeared on Her Majesty’s official social media account.

Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester on their golden wedding anniversary! To mark their 50th wedding anniversary, a new photo of the couple, taken in the garden of their Kensington Palace home earlier this week, was released, the post read.

Prince Richard and Danish Birgitte van Dörs (father’s surname Henriksen) were married on 8 July 1972 in Barnwell, Northamptonshire. After her marriage, Birgitta was given the title of “Her Royal Highness The Princess of Gloucester”. Six weeks after their wedding, Richard’s older brother Prince William died in a plane crash. Richard succeeded his father and succeeded to the title of Duke of Gloucester on his death in 1974. Birgitta, accordingly, became “Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Gloucester”.

The couple had three children: Alexander (1974), Lady Davina (1977) and Lady Rose (1980). All of them do not belong to the royal family and do not perform any duties. But their parents still do it, although they rarely make it to the front pages of the news. Spouses take part in royal receptions, evenings, banquets and meetings, in religious services.

Birgitta, for example, is the patron of a large number of medical, social and educational institutions and organizations such as the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Tennis Club. She also accompanies her husband on official events abroad. The first such occasion was the 70th birthday of the Norwegian King Olav V in 1973. The couple have visited many countries, including the United States, Australia, Belgium, China, Denmark, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Luxembourg, Nepal, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and others. They also represented the Queen at the funeral of King Tupou IV of Tongo in 2006 and at the coronation of the new King of Tongo in 2008.
