Another actor was about to play the mythical character in one of television’s most successful comedies.
Chandler Bing is one of the most popular comic characters of all time and, for many fans, he he was the all-time favorite of “Friends”. Consequently, there was great sadness when Matthew Perry died of a drug overdose in October 2023, at just 54 years old.
Almost no one can think of another actor to play Chandler, but Perry wasn’t originally slated for the role. As “SlashFilm” reports, he was the producers’ first choice. Martha Kauffman, David Crane AND Kevin S. Brightbut his schedule initially put a damper on his plans.
Perry had already signed on to star in a sci-fi comedy titled “LAX 2194,” which would have revolved around a group of baggage handlers at Los Angeles International Airport in the year 2194. In 1994, the same year that “Friends” premiered.A pilot episode was filmed in which Perry appeared alongside Ryan Stiles and Kelly Hu.
