On Saturday (27), the PSDB congress confirmed José Luiz Datena as candidate for mayor of São Paulo. The 67-year-old presenter enters the race known to 90% of the São Paulo electorate, according to a Quaest poll published in GloboNews.
The journalist has 12% of voting intentions – behind Guilherme Boulos, of PSOL, and Ricardo Nunes, of MDB – according to a recent survey by the Foundation School of Sociology and Politics of São Paulo (FESPSP).
After having given up on previous candidacies, Datena this time signals his intention to go all the way. The decision to risk politics has to do with his situation on television.
The presenter himself even claimed that the Band’s salary was cut by 70%. It is estimated that he received almost R$ 1 million per month, between a fixed amount and merchandising commissions.
When she flirted with a candidacy in the previous elections, Datena found herself in a more comfortable situation on TV. It was not worth exchanging “Urgent Brazil” for a political position with a proportionally low income.

In the campaign for mayor of the most important city in the country, the presenter has in his favor the issue of public safety, highlighted as a priority by the voters. His image is associated with a harsh criticism against crime thanks to the editorial line of ‘Brasil Urgente’. The slogan “attack yourself to them”, to ask for severe punishment for criminals, became popular.
