At 76, Neill was interviewed by autistic interviewers on the program “The Assembly”and was almost speechless when it came to what was the “biggest lesson” he learned from his mother and father.
“Wow, that’s a really interesting question,” the actor began, already emotional. “I don’t know why that question moved me so much, but it did. My parents were part of the generation that went through a lot of hardship. They went through [Grande] Depression. My mother lost her father in the first war [mundial]. She grew up without her father. They went through a lot, but they were very stoic people,” she said.
He also recalled a difficult year at university when he put academics on the back burner, prioritizing theater and “trying to find a girlfriend.” He revealed that he was “really anxious” when final exams approached and he realized he hadn’t studied at all, leaving it up to his mother to decide what to do.
“I said, ‘Oh, I think I’m having a nervous breakdown and I have exams in a few weeks and I don’t know how it’s going to go.’ [me sair]’. She just looked at me and said, ‘Well, you’re going to have to pull yourself together, aren’t you?’ I think that was the best lesson I learned from her, sometimes you just have to pull yourself together. It’s a hard lesson, but a good one,” the ‘Jurassic Park’ star concluded.
Neill also spoke to reporters about his treatment and the current stage of his fight against the disease. “I’m in a different place now, so at least I don’t look like someone’s bald thumb,” he joked. “I was like that for a long time: it was embarrassing, I lost my beard and everything, and with it my dignity,” he concluded.
