Felipe Neto is convicted for claiming that MP Paulo Bilynsky’s grandfather was a ‘Nazi’

The influencer criticized the tribute from the parliamentarian, who said that his grandfather “fought to free Ukraine from the communist clutches”

The Court of Sao Paulo condemned the influencer Philip Neto compensate the federal deputy in R$5,000 Paul Bilynskyjafter making a publication stating that the The MP’s grandfather was a “Nazi” and had fought in “Hitler’s army”.

The legal dispute took place after Bilynsky paid homage to his grandfather in the Chamber of Deputies in May 2023. At the time, he says the Ukrainian family member, Bohadan Bilynsky, “at the age of 20 fought a world war to liberate Ukraine from the clutches of the communists.”

The deputy then said he was doing like his grandfather, “fighting against the establishment of a communist regime in Brazil.” “It is in our blood to destroy communism,” he said at the time.

In an insinuation addressed to then Minister of Justice Flávio Dino and President Lula Inácio Lula da Silva, (PT), the MP also stated that a “communist minister disarms the population” and a “disgraced president declares support for the dictator Vladimir Putin”.

After the comment, Felipe Neto echoed Paulo Bilynskyj’s speech from the House gallery and said: “Deputy Bolsonaro praises, in every word, his Nazi grandfather who fought in Hitler’s army.” The publication was made on X (formerly Twitter).

Bilynsky took the case to court and declared that the influencer’s statements were lies, that Felipe Neto had distorted Ukrainian history during World War II, and that there was no connection between Nazism and his grandfather’s fight against the “communist dictatorship”.

In the trial, the MP claimed that his grandfather was part of the “Galician Division”, a battalion formed from Ukrainian volunteers after the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Bilynsky argues that the split required “only fighting the Russians” and “swearing allegiance to Ukraine, not to Hitler.”

In his defense, Felipe Neto said the parliamentarian’s speech was repudiated by researchers and organizations such as the Brazil-Israel Institute and the Holocaust Museum. He also said that the division that fought the Russian army in Ukraine had explicit relations with the Nazi army.

Again according to the influencer, if the deputy’s story about his grandfather’s fight against the communists during the Second World War is true, then “he was actually on the side of the Nazi army”.

In the decision, judge Fernanda Panseri Ferreira granted a partial case to Bilynskyj, who asked for compensation of R$40,000. He ordered the influencer to pay R$5,000 after mentioning that Felipe Neto had offended the MP by calling his grandfather a Nazi and also ordered X to remove the “offensive” publication.

Felipe Neto can still appeal. On social media, the influencer spoke out and called the decision one of the “most incredible in recent years.” “We will obviously appeal and we are sure that justice will realize the absurdity of the case,” he said.

Bilynsky did not comment on the court’s decision. The space remains open for demonstrations.
