The incredible story of the screenwriter who achieved awards and fame thanks to a life based on lies
In an age where viewers are increasingly dependent on “true crime” documentaries, coming across stories of scams targeting people has sparked an equally strong interest. Based on an article written for “Vanity Fair” magazine, the documentary series “Anatomy of Lies”, produced by NBC’s Peacock, follows a hard-to-believe story. Set to work as a screenwriter on “Grey’s Anatomy,” Elisabeth Finch pretended to have cancer. And from that moment on his lies only increased.
Still unobtainable in Brazil, but easily available, the production follows in the footsteps of a mythologist who brought other people’s experiences, but also invented ones, to television. And thanks to this she was rewarded. She became co-executive producer of the series, one of the longest-running today. The lies were so many that they began to involve his family too: he accused his brother of mistreatment, pretended to have only one kidney for his wife, among many other things.
Finch even pretended to help shooting victims, such was his level of self-centeredness. It took a while for the hoax to be discovered but, to this day, she remains unapologetic about her creations, which even claimed the job of TV director. It’s scary what people do to achieve fame – it’s no different in Brazil – but, in this case, it’s impressive that no one discovered it sooner.
