In an interview with Contigo!, cardiologist Natalia Massoni describes in detail Raquel Brito’s disease, called acute myocarditis, and warns of more serious cases

According to the doctor, myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle, called myocardium. It can happen due to an inflammatory response in the body, after a viral infection, which she says is the most common cause. “Or due to other conditions, such as autoimmune diseases or medications”he informs, adding that it can present itself in lighter and self-limiting ways.
“In most cases, with symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, fever or even more serious forms, in which the patient is admitted to the emergency room with intense shortness of breath and a drop in oxygen levels in the blood; and also blood pressure, which requires greater support in intensive care, with intubation, mechanical ventilation and even mechanical cardiac support, in the most severe cases – what we call ECMO”explains.
Also according to Natalia, in extreme cases a heart transplant may be necessary. “Fortunately, the vast majority of cases have a self-limited and less serious evolution, but it is important to know that this disease can manifest itself in very mild, but also very serious forms, with the risk of death”, strengthens.
In general, treatment for milder cases is symptomatic, the doctor says, because the disease has a self-limiting course. “For those patients who develop “heart muscle weakness”, we must provide all the necessary circulatory support and, if necessary, treat with immunosuppressants to control the inflammatory response, which causes this aggression to the heart muscle. As already mentioned above, cases very extreme conditions require ECMO and even heart transplant”underlines.
Natalia guarantees that in the vast majority of cases the problem will be solved and that, once the clinical conditions improve, they will be able to continue their lives normally. “Few patients will have permanent damage to heart function and will need to continue taking medications to treat heart failure, as well as for cardiac rehabilitation. Heart function should be regularly monitored through imaging tests such as echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging.”scores.
Treatment of heart failure after myocarditis requires a personalized approach, according to the cardiologist at Clínica Sartor, taking into account the severity of the failure, the cause of the myocarditis and the response to treatment. “The goal is to relieve symptoms, improve heart function and prevent long-term complications”he concludes.

Updating her health status, Raquel Brito said she had just completed a series of tests. “Now, apparently, my heart is fine. To the glory of God! Davi Brito’s sister said she is being carefully monitored by specialists. “I will have a cardiologist who will take care of me here in Salvador (BA), he will follow me.
