Gustavo Scarpa opens a skate park in Hortolândia, but the project is marred by labor disputes

Gustavo ScarpaAtlético Mineiro midfielder, opened this Tuesday (12/11) a skatepark named after him in Hortolândia, the player’s hometown, in the hinterland of São Paulo. Despite investing significant resources to make the project a reality, the construction site has been embroiled in controversy following accusations of work irregularities by employees who participated in the work.

During the event, Shoe Friends and skaters attended and underlined the importance of encouraging this sport. The track was built with the athlete’s own resources, who is also a skateboard enthusiast, and the land was made available by the local municipality.

Construction and labor disputes

The construction of the “Gustavo Scarpa Skate Park” began in September 2022, while the player was still at Palmeiras. The project was carried out by the company PUG Skateparks, specialized in the sector, with the support of the Department of Education, Science and Technology of Hortolândia and the Gustavo Scarpa Institute.

The goal was to create an “international skateboard rink” in the city of athletes, with resources from the tax incentive law. However, the project ended up generating controversy. In December, the Leo Dias portal he revealed it Mario Dias Santanaa bricklayer who worked on the project reported failure to register, unsanitary conditions and failure to pay the full agreed upon amount during the three months he was on site (May to July 2023).

“I arrived and the work had already started, but I did a first-rate job. It’s difficult to build a skatepark with a straight finish. I was there three months without registration, dragging myself around”he said Mario.

Furthermore, the bricklayer approached the court requesting retroactive amounts. In another PUG project, in Indaiatuba, Mario worked from July 2023 to February 2024, but also found irregularities in the payment and signature of the card. Your claim amounts to R$156,000. Two other similar trials, again linked to labor problems, are being examined at the Campinas labor court, for a total of R$210,000 in compensation claims for moral damages and non-payment of wages and benefits.

Scarpa’s response

In a note, Gustavo Scarpa he downplayed the accusations and reiterated his commitment to the project, which focuses on promoting sport among youth and children in the region. In an Instagram post, the athlete said the allegations were attempts to distort his work.

“I would like to inform you that I have already spoken to the Court and I am still waiting for the next steps. Unfortunately there is no shortage of bad guys who want to take advantage of other people’s work… no news”he declared Shoe.

And he continued: “Our main objective is to encourage sport and support teenagers and children from the Hortolândia region and nearby cities. It is curious that, to help the Scarpinha Institute pay for the works on the track, which will be of great use to many people, no one was ready” concluded the player.
