Politics seems increasingly attractive to those who like to be in the spotlight
Fame, success and wealth are goals for most people. Once achieved, what will be the next goal? In the case of some artists and sub-celebrities it is the Presidency of the Republic.
The youngest person interested in the important position in the Executive is Gustavo Lima, 35 years old. The country singer surprises by positioning himself as a possible political opponent of former president Jair Bolsonaro, whom he has always supported.
From the state of Goiás, he appears to be keeping an eye on the power of influence of agribusiness, one of the major pillars of the Brazilian economy, and the growing number of Brazilians identified with conservatism.
In front of ‘Imperador’, the former BBB24 champion, Davi Brito, 22 years old, expressed his desire to lead the country: “Who knows, maybe even become president. Also occupy Lula’s place. It is Lula who goes out and I who enter,” he said, still in prison, praying for the PT member.
Another participant in the Globo reality show, Gil do Vigor, 33, a graduate in Economics in the United States, also wants to get to the Palácio do Planalto. “I really want to lead Brazil in setting the tone. I often say that the president is like the conductor of an orchestra,” he said.
In 2018 Luciano Huck articulated his candidacy. He had the support of former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso and other powerful names. He would be a representative of the center on the political spectrum.
Three years later, the presenter’s name was again considered a ticket heading. But he preferred to renew his contract with Globo and took on the mission of replacing Fausto Silva on Sundays.
Although the plan to swap television for politics has apparently cooled, Huck signals that he won’t bury the possibility.
“When I talk about this topic it’s not what I want to be, what I will be, I have no vanity in this matter. I am a political citizen because I am an active citizen of civil society and I want politics to be renewed,” he told ‘Altas Horas’ in December.
“This is a personal project of mine and a group of people who believe that Brazil can be, in the future, a more just and inclusive country, which generates opportunities regardless of where one is born”.
We see that these celebrities attracted by the idea of being president of Brazil have in common, in addition to the ambition required by the role, the certainty – or, if the reader prefers, the illusion – that they would do everything differently from traditional politicians.
History shows that a small part of the celebrities elected at the polls managed to distinguish themselves positively during their mandate. The majority finds itself swallowed up by the machine of power in the hands of small groups and the state bureaucracy.
Considering the country’s popular idol worship, it is not impossible that Brazil will elect a president who is a TV presenter, singer, former reality star or influencer, however there is no guarantee that he will achieve the desired social revolution.
