In an interview with Revista Caras, Gabriela comments on her first steps in her solo career after the end of the band Melim, formed with her brothers
After eight years of success in the band Melim, achieving successes together with his brothers, Diogo (32) e Rodrigo (32), Gabriela (30) takes new flights and invests in a solo career. Starting from scratch was not easy, but the singer is happy with the results obtained with the release of her first album, which bears her name.
“Courage is also a bit your going to fear. I am immersing myself in my references. And this happiness compensates everything“says Gabriela, during an exclusive interview with Revista BOYSin his penthouse, in Rio de Janeiro.
Made, the artist, who in the past had to face problems such as depression and eating disorders, has transformed the difficulties into lessons and believes that the public will see it “Lighter, lighter, more mature, the more I!“, he warns, enthusiastic about the future in music.
How did the band end and how did you decide to embark on a solo career?
We decided it two years before announcing it and it was a group decision, not individual. We saw that after a while everyone wanted something and nobody could be just as happy with their choices. I think it arrived at the right time, we managed to deliver everything that Melim fans deserved, the contract [com a gravadora] He won and still took a year to make the DVD, to leave it to the fans and to us too, because it is a beautiful job. We are proud of our path.
The band was a success. Exchange the right with doubt requires courage …
It’s frightening! But I always do the one I believe in. Everything I recorded to date are songs that I wrote, so I started making the album based on the repertoire and I think the courage has come over time, I felt more comfortable in seeing the album take shape. I was happy because it is very true, there is a lot of me inside. Sometimes, in a group, we cannot dig too deeply of each member and with solo work I can show my references. Before Melim, I started with the Samba Roots and I sing professionally since I was 14, 15 years old, so the album has this Brazilian quality. For me it is very important to be happy and this happiness compensates everything. Courage is also a bit your going to fear. I don’t think anyone is so sure, right? Even more for those who are artists, who have this sensitivity in the way they see … So it is really frightening to go into this thing.
How was the album response?
I am very happy with how things went, the video of Saudade whisper had 1 million views, seeing the first 100, 100 thousand monthly listeners on Spotify is really nice, seeing the song to go to the radio … and not only numerically, But seeing all this grow quickly, since it is an organic push, I became independent, I am not on a major and it was also my choice. I wanted to be able to make my decisions and let the artist speak stronger. I am happy to see that my career has always been constructed with consistency, brick after brick.
Music moves you, right?
It’s all for me! I suffered in some periods of my career, I had a depression at the culmination of the Melim, I had a eating disorder, I suffered. We did 25, 26 shows a month, apart from TV, radio, composition, we didn’t have our jet, there were crazy times, don’t sleep, you eat, you are in a corner every day, he shook me emotionally. My bond with music is very strong, because even if I had to face different tests, I could not give up the grip.
And even then you didn’t give up music!
I had some tests, but I didn’t let go, it’s my purpose. There is a lot of pressure, you have to face many things, it is grueling. There are many wonderful things, like the affection of the public. Listening to your music, playing and putting on a show is the thing I love most in the world, but life on the road is a little cruel, you have to give up a lot. I had the tough test that music is the most important thing, I can’t help but do it.
And how did you manage to heal from depression and eating disorders?
Having my mother was important with me and when I was very tired, that global sadness that was the pandemic of Covid-19 came. There I had to stop, he helped me to eat again, to sleep, to put his head back in place. It was a period in which I managed to recompose myself, to return to being myself. And I also managed to recover the voice, because I still had a vocal problem, I had almost lost the vibration of the right vocal rope, for having played so much, but I managed to recover 100% with a lot of phar.
Was being an independent artist a choice thinking of taking control of your life?
That’s right, so I can make my decisions. We must know how to establish limits to be emotionally healthy. Today I really give priority to my mental health. I said: ‘I don’t know what I want, but I know what I don’t want’. I did shows in every way, feeling bad, without sleeping, without a voice and I don’t think this is the way to a coherent and healthy career. But I also had memorable moments, it’s nice to look at Melim’s path, because we weren’t involved in controversy, everything was based on music and it is something that I am proud of, because I want music to be the protagonist.
And in life you started a new cycle. Did you have a crisis when you turned 30?
When I was younger I thought that I would get married within 30 and I would have had children and, today, Pudding is my baby [risos]. I am very skilled with the stops I built, but I still have a lot to make. I feel like I was starting from the end.
