The decree was published on Tuesday in the Official Gazette of the Municipality. In justification, Paes highlighted the artist’s “victorious and professional trajectory”, as well as his essential role in the rescue of Carnival street in the center of Rio and in the consolidation of Megablocos.
As a topic, Paes considered “the decisive participation of Preta Gil in the resumption of Carnival Street in the center of Rio, contributing to his declaration as the urban space of cultural citizenship”.
The now black circuit Gil includes the traditional route created by Megablocos in Rua on March 1, which follows the president Antônio Carlos Avenue at the height of Araújo Porto Alegre Street.
The same path was made by the singer on his electric trio since 2009, when he made his debut the Black Block. According to the mayor of the state capital, the event led by his “is one of Rio Carnival’s most relevant expressions that brings together millions of people on the streets of the center of Rio de Janeiro”.
In February 2023, Prete announced that he would not start with the electric trio for the first time. The reason was the beginning of cancer treatment after the discovery of cancer in January of the same year.
At the next Carnival, in 2024, the Black Block returned to a commemorative edition. However, the singer was led by his medical team not to pull the electric trio, which made the event happen in a festive house in the western area of Rio.
Preta Gil died on Sunday 20, after two long years of battle against intestine cancer. At the request of the singer, his body will be veiled in the municipal theater of the capital of Rio de Janeiro and a procession will be held on an electric trio.
The Gil family deals with the procedures for the transfer of the body and, therefore, the date of the wake is not yet known.
