Studies conducted by psychologist Albert Mehrabian, professor emeritus of psychology at the University of California, known for his research on non-verbal communication, reveal that the true importance of a message lies not in the message itself, but in the way in which we convey it through the tone of voice and of the facial expressions we use when we speak.

Based on this theory, there is a phrase that emotionally intelligent people say to themselves to gain respect and strengthen their relationships. It’s bright and simple, with just nine words: “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.”

Mehrabian and Morton Wiener, a social psychology researcher, studied how a person judges the feelings of another when what is said is inconsistent in relation to the tone of voice used.

The goal was to determine whether the content or words used were more or less important than the tone of voice. The researchers concluded that when what is said in words does not match the tone of the voice, the perceived attitude is mainly based on the tonal component.
