Jonah Hill, 38, reflected on his mental health while working on his second feature film, the Netflix documentary Stutz, named after his personal therapist, Dr. Phil Stutz. Hill realized that he had been suffering from an anxiety disorder for more than 20 years, exacerbated by media pressure and public outings, and decided to save himself from unnecessary stress – at the moment he has already refused to participate in the promotion of a new documentary. Hill spoke about his decision in a lengthy appeal published by Deadline.
I am very grateful that the film will have its world premiere at a prestigious film festival this fall and I can’t wait to share it with audiences around the world in the hope that it will help those who are struggling. However, you won’t see me there promoting this picture or any of my future films while I take this important step to protect myself. If I made it worse for myself by going there and promoting it, I wouldn’t be true to myself or the film.

Hill stressed that he can afford a day off due to his star status, and he will definitely take this opportunity.
I usually get sick of such statements, but I understand that I belong to those few privileged people who can afford to take a day off, he wrote. I will not lose my job while I try to cope with my anxiety. With the help of this letter and the film “Stutz”, I hope to normalize conversations on this subject. So that all people can take steps to feel better, and so that others can understand their problems more clearly.
Note that in an interview with GQ last year, Hill repeatedly repeated the name of the psychotherapist Phil Stutz, who was recommended to him in 2017 by his friend and colleague in the film Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, Joaquin Phoenix.
He invented a set of visualization techniques that changed my life a lot. Netflix let me make a documentary about Phil’s therapy and teachings, and then it turned into a movie about Phil’s life, and then into a movie about how crazy it is to make a movie about your own therapist,” he said at the time.
It seems that John Hill’s temporary departure from the profession also affected his social networks – now the actor’s personal blogs on various platforms have been deleted.
In recent years, mental health has become a popular topic in Hollywood – not only Jonah Hill, but also Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Halsey and many others speak absolutely openly and without hesitation about their mental problems.
