Political topics weren’t off limits at the 2022 Emmy Awards, as former President Donald Trump and the British succession were the butt of jokes at Monday’s ceremony.
Several aides pointed to the FBI’s seizure of more than 100 boxes and containers filled with confidential records during an Aug. 8 search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, Florida property. One of his jokes was: “I love white lotus, but murder isn’t the worst thing that can happen at the resort. Do you know what this is? What the FBI did to my president in Mar-a-Lago!”
Accepting Best Drama Series for the night’s final award, heritage Creator Jesse Armstrong said it was a “big week for the succession”, referring to King Charles III assuming the British throne for his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
“It looks like there was a little more voting involved in our victory than Prince Charles,” Armstrong said. After co-star Brian Cox told him to “keep royalty”, Armstrong continued, “I’m not saying we’re any more legitimate in our position than he is. Let’s leave that to other people.”
