Robert Brown, from the classic series “And the Brides Arrived”, dies at 95

Actor Robert Brown, who starred in the classic series “And the Brides Are Here,” died on September 19 at his home in Ojai, California at the age of 95.

Robin Adair MacKenzie Brown was born on November 17, 1926 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He was the son of the English butler of Teddy Roosevelt and Sara Roosevelt, respectively president and first lady of the United States.

After serving in the United States Navy, Brown studied with Lee Strasberg, founder of the Actors Studio, and made his Broadway debut in 1948. But he ended up being blacklisted by Communists in the US entertainment industry by refusing to sign a “loyalty oath”. which cost him a ban on New York theaters.

Political persecution led him to leave New York for Los Angeles, where he resumed his career as an extra in films and series. He also appeared in uncredited “Dare” (1948) and “Wild Souls” (1953) and only after the end of the witch hunt did he get better roles. His first, only and last feature film was in the horror film “The Tower of London”, directed by Roger Corman and starring Vincent Price in 1962.

On the other hand, his career took off on TV, where he made several appearances in different series such as “Caravan”, “Perry Mason” and “Star Trek”, before being cast in 1968 in the role of Jason Bolt, the most elder of the three woodcutter brothers of “And the brides came”.

Conceived as an unarmed western, the drama series followed the lives of pioneers in the U.S. countryside of the 19th century, when cities began to spring up around faraway places, attracting only men.

The plot of the series created by N. Richard Nash (writer of the recent film “Cry Macho”) was loosely based on the true story of the so-called Mercer Girls, who were brought to the prosperous city of Seattle in the 1860s to work as teachers. and inspired Stanley Donen’s musical “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” (1954).

The series ran for two seasons until 1970. After that, the actor had a few career highlights, including the role of a statue that came to life in an episode of “Bewitched”. His attempt to star in a new series the following year, “Primus”, was only one year in production.

He also appeared in the chapters of “Mannix”, “Columbo” and “Fantasy Island”, before disappearing from the screens. But he could have lived a completely different career if he had stayed on the other project he was listed on at the time of “And the Brides Arrived”.

In 1968, Brown was cast in the role of detective Steve McGarrett in the original series pilot “Hawaii Five-0”. But something happened behind the scenes where he was replaced by Jack Lord five days before recording began, at the initiative of producer Leonard Freeman. Lord lived McGarrett until 1980.
