BTS, the largest K-Pop group in the world, have announced that they will take a break from their career so that their members can carry out compulsory military service in South Korea. The news was already expected, but it has been confirmed. only this Monday (17/10), through an official press release from the Big Hit Music agency.
“BTS members are currently moving forward with plans to carry out their military service,” the company said, noting that Jin, the group’s oldest member, will be the first to join the military shortly after launching. a solo project. in late October.
Although the company claims that “the other members of the group intend to do military service according to their individual plans,” it is possible that they enlist soon after as they intend to reunite in 2025. “Both the company and the BTS members do not see the time to get back together as a group around 2025, after their engagement in military service. “
“With the release of their first anthology album earlier this year, this paved the way for members to explore individual projects. As part of the HYBE family, we support and encourage our artists and are proud that now each of them will have time to explore their unique interests and do their homework, serving the country they call home, ”the label added. “After the phenomenal show to support Busan’s bid for Expo 2030, and as each individual embarks on solo pursuits, it’s the perfect time and BTS members are honored to serve.”
On Saturday (15/10), the band held a free concert in the city of Busan, in support of the city’s bid to host the World Expo 2030. The concert, titled “Yet To Come (The Most Beautiful Moment”) [Ainda Por Vir (O Momento Mais Bonito)], has been seen by more than 50 million people. According to the company, “Yet To Come” is not just the name of BTS ‘new song, but a promise for the band’s future.
In South Korea, military service is mandatory for all able-bodied men under the age of 30. However, the current system allows for some exceptions due to the exceptional service to the country. Some athletes and classical musicians have already been fired on this basis, but so far no K-Pop artist has been fired.
The possibility of turning BTS into the first K-Pop band to achieve this waiver was discussed, as well as a hybrid model of military obligation fulfillment, which would allow them to maintain their artistic career. None of this, however, has gone on.
Jin will be the first to serve because he will turn 30 on December 4, reaching the maximum age for enlistment. During the Busan concert he announced that he will soon release a single with “Someone I’ve Always Liked”.
Shortly after the announcement, Hybe Corporation (owner of Big Hit Music, the group’s record label) issued a letter to its shareholders, trying to reassure them, stating that the company is bigger than BTS. “Hybe is confident in the framework that has been in place for the past 10 years,” he said in the letter.
However, since the announcement, the company’s shares have fallen by 2.5%. However, this is a minor drop compared to what occurred months ago when a video was released by BTS saying they were going on “hiatus”.
At the time, the company lost more than $ 1 billion and soon tried to correct the situation, issuing statements stating that the word “interruption” had never been uttered by members of the group and that it was an error in the English subtitles of the video (although the caption was made by the company itself).
