Kevin Spacey regrets apologizing to Anthony Rapp in his sexual harassment trial. “Never apologize for something you didn’t do.”
Kevin Spacey faces trial for sexual harassment to Anthony Rapp when he was a minor of 14 years. The actor faces a demand for $40 million in damageand on Monday he was visibly distressed and repeatedly broke down in tears.
Last week, fellow performer Anthony Rapp testified that Spacey invited him to a party at his apartment. After the guests left, Spacey allegedly picked Rapp up and pushed him onto his bed, laying on top of him in a sexually aggressive manner. Rapp claims that he fled into Spacey’s bathroom and then left the apartment. In the court, Rapp said the incident with Spacey remains “the single most traumatic event of my life.”.
Spacey publicly apologized in 2017. with Rapp in a statement acknowledging his homosexuality, stating that he had no recollection of the incident, and offering Rapp “the sincerest of apologies for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.”
Spacey now blames his publicist for convincing him to apologize and “regrets” that statement. “They encouraged me to apologize and I learned a lesson, which never apologize for something you didn’t do”.
Spacey admitted knowing Rapp, though denied the incident. He said that she had gone to a club at the time with Rapp as well as another actor, John Barrowman. Spacey said he had flirted with Barrowman, driving him back to his apartment after partying at Limelight, a popular nightspot at the time, with Rapp. But he didn’t do anything with Barrowman due to Rapp’s presence.
Spacey has also defended himself against Rapp’s insinuations of “fraud” for not coming out early. The star of ‘House of Cards’ has claimed that he kept it a secret because of his father. “My father was a white supremacist and a neo-Nazi”, he said about his father, Thomas Fowler. “I have never talked about these things publicly.” Spacey has stated that he was forced to listen to his father’s racist and homophobic speech when he was a child. When he told him that he wanted to be an actor, he replied: “Don’t be a fagot”.
“To call someone a fraud is to say that someone is living a lie,” Spacey said. “I wasn’t living a lie. I was just reluctant to talk about my personal life.”
