The actor claims to have spent close to $9 million on his way to sobriety. Now, with the publication of his memoirs, he talks about how difficult the journey is.
matthew perry, one of the great stars of the 90’s sitcom ‘Friends’, whom we could see giving life to the unforgettable and charismatic Chandler Bing, recently talked to New York Times about the costly road he has followed to get rid of his addiction.
The actor, who had already publicly acknowledged his abusive relationship with narcotics, has claimed to have invested an approximate amount of 9 million dollars in rehabilitation treatments. He did it by presenting his new book, ”Friends, lovers and that so terrible’, which will go on sale in Spain on November 17 published by Contraluz. This memoir summarizes Perry’s journey through the best and worst moments of her life. The essential core of the memories of her and of what she would like to forget.
“I probably spent $9 million or something trying to get sober,“said the interpreter, who in turn celebrated taking 18 months away from any type of drug or alcohol. This implies that he was in a state of sobriety when the emotional meeting of the cast took place in ‘Friends: The Reunion’, last year .
Perry had also talked about this process with the magazine Peopleto whom he stated that “the first step is to be sober“.
“If you’re not sober, you’re going to lose everything else, so my sobriety is above all else,” he commented. “I am an extremely grateful man. I am grateful to be alive, that of course. That gives me the ability to do anything.“
The actor also confessed to having had a near-death experience, which managed to change once and for all his perspective of the addiction he suffered from. After a serious condition in his colon, he was hospitalized for 5 months wearing a collection bag. This experience served as a catalyst for Perry to decide to put an end to his situation once and for all.
“My therapist told me: ‘The next time you think about using OxyContin, think about carrying a collection bag for the rest of your life,‘” Matthew explained. “It was a small window that opened and I crawled through it. I no longer want OxyContin.”
Matthew Perry has also been blunt about how instrumental his ‘Friends’ castmates were in his struggle. Speaking of his addiction, which reached extremely high levels during the filming of several seasons of the series, Perry assured that Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Matt Leblanc, Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer formed a real chain of care.
“They were understanding and patient.” affirmed the actor. “It’s the same with penguins. In the wild, if one is sick or seriously injured, the other penguins surround him and move him until he can walk on his own. It is similar to what my colleagues did to me.“
Now, after 18 months away from his own hell, it remains to be seen that the unforgettable “Chandler” follows his new path. We, loyal fans of his hilarious on-screen exploits, will accompany you.
‘Friends, lovers and that so terrible’ goes on sale next November 1. ‘Friends’ has all its seasons available in streaming on HBO Max.
