Choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov received a medal from the Royal Academy of Dance for “an enormous contribution to the art of ballet and the world of dance.” This is reported on the website of the academy.

The awards ceremony took place on Wednesday at Buckingham Palace. The award was presented to him by Queen Consort Camilla Parker-Bowles. The wife of King Charles III during the ceremony said that it was an honor for her to present this award to Baryshnikov, and noted that “no one deserves it more than he.”

It is a great honor for me to accept from the hands of Her Majesty the Queen Consort the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award from the Royal Academy of Dance,” said the 74-year-old choreographer. – It is a real honor for me to be included in such an impressive list of laureates. I am proud to have worked with many of them and call them friends.

According to Academy President Darcy Bussell, Baryshnikov has inspired many young and ambitious performers around the world, has never been afraid to pursue artistic expression, and has also shown his talents in acting, film, television, documentaries and so on. Bussell emphasized that it was a great honor for her to present this award.

The medal, which bears the name of Queen Elizabeth II, is the highest award of the British Academy, established on the occasion of the coronation of the mother of Charles III in 1953. Previous recipients of this award include Rudolf Nureyev and Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta, artistic director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

The academy itself was founded in 1920. It trains and certifies dancers, as well as ballet teachers. Now it has over 14,000 members from 79 countries.

Mikhail Baryshnikov, who is one of the greatest ballet dancers, has been living abroad for many years. He left the USSR for Canada in 1974 on tour, but did not return to his homeland and remained in the United States.
