Disney acquires World Cup rights for Star+

Disney has closed a contract with Fifa (International Football Federation) for the right to broadcast the best moments of the 64 World Cup matches in Qatar on the Star+ streaming platform. With this, the American company puts an end to the exclusivity of Globo, which will also show the compacts of the games on Globoplay.

The best moments will be available a few minutes after the end of the matches.

For Disney, the strategy is to introduce Star+ also as a “sports channel”. In the United States, Disney keeps its sports streaming broadcast, ESPN+, separate from pre-recorded content platforms. But this is not the case abroad, where Star+ and/or Disney+ are the only services available.

Thus, ESPN storytellers and employees are mobilizing for the Star+ compacts, which will also contain comments from famous former athletes, such as Zé Elias, Luís Fabiano, Silas, Amoroso, Djalminha, Fernando Prass and Fábio Luciano, stars who have already dressed the green and yellow jersey of the Brazilian national team.

Disney will also be covered by ESPN, which sent 20 journalists to Qatar – including Gustavo Hofman and Mauro Naves – even without the right to broadcast live matches.

The deal was only possible because, in 2021, Globo gave up the digital media exclusivity of its FIFA World Cup deal, aiming to save money on royalties payments. But this has allowed the organization that organizes the World Cup to put the tournament on different platforms. In addition to the Disney deal, streamer Casimiro will show 22 live matches from the tournament.
