Singer Gilberto Gil spoke after being harassed by Brazilian fans at the Lusail stadium, where the Brazilian national team played against Serbia during the World Cup in Qatar last Thursday.

In a post on his Instagram profile, he thanked the expressions of support. “Our thanks, mine and Flora’s. Anyway, for this solidarity, this current of solidarity in the face of this aggression, this stupid thing. It’s the third round, actually, right? The mavericks who want to keep this hate thing , of aggression,” he began.

“My thanks and those of Flora go to all of you who have shown solidarity with us in this episode, which is actually another of this hate sequence. This thing is what they like to do,” concluded the composer.

The video recording the moment of the offenses circulates on social networks. The images show Gilberto Gil, accompanied by his wife Flora Gil, heading towards the stands of the stadium, while being offended with vulgarity. “Vamo, Lei Rouanet”, in reference to the law to encourage cultural projects, and “Vamo, Bolsonaro”, the fans also shouted. The singer and his wife did not respond to the insults.

After the video was posted on social media, personalities showed solidarity with the artist.

“My brother in music and in life, Gilberto Gil, has been insulted by the Bolsonarists in Qatar. He is 80 years old and was with his wife. I want to show solidarity with the genius Gil and say that we, the artists, as well as real society, hope that the offenders are punished”, wrote Caetano Veloso on his Twitter profile.

Preta Gil, daughter of the singer, also supported Gilberto Gil: “What happened to my father and Flora on the day of the Brazil match in Qatar, where they were verbally attacked by a violent Bolsonarist, is scary,” she said.
