The singer, who recorded with Ana Gabriela, in Rio de Janeiro, spoke to Estadão about his travels, love of music and unusual situations in Brazil: “I haven’t experienced it anywhere, only there”
Imagine being a musician and traveling the world recording with artists from every capital city you visit for a year. This is the premise of the work of the French Oscar Anton, who has been traveling since January 2022 to collaborate with international and foreign artists. In between trips, she visited Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to create a song with the singer Anna Gabriella🇧🇷
The artist’s team found the singer in social networks. Anton then listened to his discography and appreciated his work. However, the encounter between the two was somewhat unusual, as they did not speak the same language.
“The first time we met it was very interesting because she doesn’t speak English very well and I obviously don’t speak Portuguese. We tried to communicate using signs or keywords, but it was very difficult. There were many of people in the same environment trying to get in touch with us. help with translation. So we focused on communication through music,” he said Stadium on the song Missingwritten in about 10 minutes.
For the first time in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro, Anton said he found the Brazilians very welcoming and kind. A counterpoint, to his notice, occurred when he was warned to be careful with thefts and robberies in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
“Walking the streets of Rio was very strange because everyone told me to be very careful with rings, necklaces, jewels… But I felt very safe with Brazilians. They told me to be careful if I walked alone. Sure, it depends from the neighborhood, but that caught my eye,” he said.
Anton had to be escorted by two security guards during the entire trip to the capital of Rio de Janeiro and he assured that “he hasn’t experienced this anywhere else, only in Rio”.
“It felt completely unnecessary because I didn’t feel in danger. But, as we were filming and recording, we were traveling with cameras and needed bodyguards so our equipment wouldn’t get stolen,” she revealed.
Without complications and despite the presence of bodyguards, Anton identified himself with the lifestyle of the cariocas. He said he has seen many people playing sports and adopting a healthy lifestyle, which he is a fan of. “It felt very familiar. I loved the vibe there,” he added.
From Paris to the world
Born in Paris, France, the artist says the beginning of his love of travel started in his childhood. His father was a TV channel presenter, whose main theme of the program was the different destinations he visited.
With his family he visited different countries, Thailand was the most memorable trip. There she experienced the songkran – Thai New Year celebration where people celebrate the date by splashing water on each other.
“They have cars with four people on the hood holding big jerrycans and throwing water at the riders and the public. It’s crazy! I remember being on a scooter with my dad, driving around town, throwing water at people, and people throwing water at the people. It was a lot of fun. I like it there because it’s very different from France.”
His passion for music was born in another way, more “traditional”, he defines it. His parents set him up to study classical music, even as a child, but he found the task boring. At around 11 he started composing his own songs and loving the area.
Some time later, it went viral with success Nuits d’etein collaboration with his sister, Clementine🇧🇷 The clip of the song alone has amassed more than nine million views since its release in 2020; on Spotify, the track has over 17 million monthly listeners.
Postcard
Always striving for more success, in 2022, he came up with the idea of visiting a different country’s capital each month, recording with a local artist and releasing the track monthly. Each work has been titled Postcard🇧🇷 For example, the compilation recorded in Rio calls Postcards from Rio🇧🇷 In London, Postcards from Londonand so on.
After finding artists through internet searches, he registered with people from Turkey, Brazil, USA, Italy, Germany. In our Zoom conversation, for example, he was on his latest destination: Morocco.
Anton also watched France’s semi-final against Morocco, in Qatar World Cup, in a country bar. He and his friends had to leave the establishment after the population became nervous about the defeat of the Moroccan team.
“They started throwing glasses and we thought it best to leave,” said the singer, who assured that no one knew his nationality. “I spoke English all the time.”
After 12 months on the road, Anton returns to Paris, France, where he lives. He says he still doesn’t know what his next destination will be, but plans to rest for at least 20 days before venturing out again.
