York City Council strips Prince Andrew of honorary award and calls for resigning as duke

According to the Daily Mail, York City Council members voted unanimously last Wednesday to strip him and all of the regalia bestowed by the city, including an honorary city award he received back in 1987. They also called on Prince Andrew to voluntarily renounce the title of Duke of York. The authorities believe that this is a necessary measure to support all victims of sexual violence. The official ruling reads:

Under section 249 of the Local Government Act of 1972, York City Council terminates the Duke of York’s honorary City Representative status, which he was awarded in 1987.

Councilors called the duke’s inappropriate behavior a “dirty stain” on the face of the city and called on the queen, the palace and the government to intervene and forcibly strip him of his title if he refused to “do the right thing” and resign voluntarily. However, the townspeople also do not want to remain under the protection of a man who is involved in a sex scandal. The public strongly supports the initiative, calling for the prince to be banned from attending the races and to take the new name “Andrew Windsor”.

Removing this honorary title sends the right message that we, as a city, stand by the victims of violence. The next step is Prince Andrew’s voluntary renunciation of the title of Duke of York, Council member Lieb Dem Darryl Smalley said.

Note that the last time the Parliament deprived the titles of several royal persons at once was in 1919, according to a law adopted two years earlier, in 1917. The Act allowed such sanctions to be applied to enemies of the United Kingdom during the First World War. So this is only the second time in UK history that this has happened.

However, Buckingham Palace is in no hurry with the decision, although the queen has already deprived Prince Andrew of her patronage, as well as the right to address him as “His Highness” and other military awards. Recall that the case on the accusation of the son of the British Queen of sexual violence, which was opened in August 2021, is officially closed, but passions have not subsided so far. Even with his family, he remains a strained relationship – at a recent memorial service for Prince Philip, he accompanied his mother, which the Andrew brothers did not like very much.
