New Balance presents a collection of footwear that meets the ecological green leaf standard

Polyester and leather are for New Balance two materials with the greatest impact on the climate and this initiative is to help support the company’s environmental goals.

New Balance’s green leaf standard indicates the adoption of environmentally friendly materials in all of its products, footwear and clothing. In the Spring 2022 collection, selected new footwear as well as inline clothing will meet the green leaf standard, which focuses on accelerating systemic changes and increasing efficiency to reduce the brand’s material impact on the environment.

Choosing to use environmentally friendly materials is one of the biggest and most direct ways a brand can have an impact on the environment. “Creating our products more responsibly is a never-ending journey,” said Cynthia Maletz, director of product development at New Balance. “We continue our green leaf project with styles from our most popular footwear lines, focusing our efforts where the impact is greatest.”

For several years now, New Balance has been building a solid foundation for sustainability practices through its Responsible Leadership program and has outlined a set of bold steps and alliances addressing various aspects of climate change, such as the use of renewable energy or the use of lower carbon materials. “New Balance is proud to be able to raise the profile of environmentally friendly materials in footwear and apparel through the green leaf standard,” said Laura Wittman, New Balance’s vice president of responsible management and compliance.

Boston-based New Balance debuted its green leaf standard for apparel in 2020, and in the coming months and years will further expand its offering and significantly increase the number of products and product categories with environmentally friendly materials. The green leaf standard indicates the adoption of ecologically preferred materials in all New Balance products, footwear and clothing.
