The premiere of the documentary “The Mysterious Mr. Lagerfeld”, which tells about the unknown side of the life of fashion designer and creative director of Chanel and Fendi fashion houses Karl Lagerfeld, will be held on April 26. The plot of the tape focuses on the career and financial problems of the late designer through the eyes of his friends. After Karl’s death in 2019, his $187 million fortune is still waiting for its owners. It is known that the designer had no direct heirs. At the moment, his Parisian apartment is sealed, and lawyers from Monaco and France have been negotiating the division of property for several years.
It is reported that the main beneficiary of the inheritance will be a 33-year-old fashion model and a close friend of Karl during the last years of his life – Baptiste Giabiconi. At some point, the designer even wanted to adopt his favorite model, but, faced with a number of bureaucratic problems, he did not do this. Baptiste believes that he is at the “top of the list of heirs”:
The adoption plan that both seemed to want was odd, not least because Batista already has a father. But he told us that he loved Lagerfeld. The result is a picture of an almost monastic existence for Lagerfeld,” says filmmaker Michael Waldman.

The documentary will be attended by many people from Karl’s entourage, who were in the shadows before his death. In addition to Baptiste Giabiconi, Lagerfeld had another close friend – Brad Kroenig. For the first time, he spoke about the designer’s great influence on the life of his family, including his sons, Lagerfeld’s godchildren. Kroenig met Carl when he was 23 and over the next three years became the highest paid international male model. Lagerfeld invited the whole Brad family to vacation in the south of France every summer.
The creators of the tape note that Karl was a very generous person, often giving expensive gifts to friends, cars, paying for flights and even buying houses for them. One day, Karl created a wedding dress for his American niece, whom he hardly knew, for free, and arranged for the product to be delivered on a significant day.
He was generous all his life,” she recalls, noting that she does not insist on an inheritance.
Other characters in the film, who for the first time will talk about the relationship with the designer, are Lagerfeld’s bodyguard Sebastien Jondeau, his Parisian neighbor, a doctor, and the longtime muse and ex-wife of Baron Francis Ormsby-Gore Amanda Harlech. She received a huge amount of books on history and culture, which were sent to her house in Shropshire, since Carl wanted her to organize a library there. Lagerfeld spared no expense on books, leaving more than half a million euros a year in the Parisian store Librairie Galignani.
Recall that this year there will be many events dedicated to Karl Legrfeld. Among them will be the iconic Met Gala ball. Recently, the media reported that the favorite cat of fashion designer Choupette, who has become one of the most famous animals in the world, will take part in the celebration. The cat has already received an official invitation to the ball.
