Pitfalls of women in the fashion industry
Designer, artist and master upcycler Nicole McLaughlin spoke candidly about the struggles and challenges she’s faced in her career in the “She Moves Us” video interview for sports brand PUMA. “People think that the fashion industry is largely female-led, but in reality there are many men in leadership positions in fashion and design,” said Nicole. “Especially in streetwear, sometimes I’m the only woman in the room.”
Change and message
Nicole focuses on sustainable works of art in her designs, for example when she turned old PUMA football gloves into a jacket. Her main advice to young designers is: “Be confident in your ideas. People want to hear your story. They want to know you and know where you get your inspiration from. Don’t be afraid to talk about it, talk about the hard stuff, everything you’ve faced. Share these things with other people, because a lot of them have been through something similar.”
Dua Lipa for PUMA
“She Moves Us” wants to empower and inspire girls and young women by sharing stories and celebrating women who are motivated together to achieve success and connect – through sports, culture and values. The platform is inspired by global pop star and PUMA brand ambassador Dua Lipa, who said: “Sharing success stories is part of changing the narrative, especially in areas such as sports and entertainment that tend to highlight the achievements of men. Women are already leading the way in all areas and celebrating their achievements is exciting and empowering. It also encourages those who rise above to aim for the stars.”
