Do not wear them: these 4 coats are contraindicated for women over 40

Winter is right around the corner and that means one thing: it’s time to trade in your cozy cardigans for chunky coats that will keep you warm.

Are you planning to update your wardrobe? If you haven’t already, be careful when shopping: according to stylist and designer of a petite women’s fashion site, Chi Li, some coat styles can add you an extra 10 years.

Checked coat

At the end of the 1950s, Balenciaga dressed the fragile Grace Kelly in a massive cocoon coat, and a few years ago modern designers rethought her idea. The model of the founder of the legendary brand has become more rough, structural and androgynous – this is how the checkered coat, often called the “boyfriend coat”, was born.

Today, checkered coats are often found in fashionistas’ wardrobes, but Chi Li thinks they rarely look good on anyone. “If you don’t wear them correctly, they will make you look older,” says the stylist. According to her, the covers overload the image and make the figure more massive.

Shirt

The jacket is a coat and shirt hybrid, considered a comfortable and original alternative to classic models. Jackets are usually made of tweed or wool, adding an inner layer of insulation and lining. Jackets are very popular right now – this is perhaps one of the hottest trends of the cold season.

However, Chi Li is sure that the jackets are shapeless, and therefore add extra weight to women and make them look older. However, the stylist believes that this effect can be easily dealt with: you need to wear the jacket unbuttoned – this will create an additional slimming horizontal line and draw attention to your waistline.

bathrobe

According to Chi, this model has two main problems. Firstly, most often such coats are made of faux fur, and therefore women wearing them always visually become larger. Secondly, the stylist says, no matter how you play with this design, such outerwear will always look like a huge bathrobe.

Velvet coat

“It’s very difficult to include such a thing in everyday outfits,” says Chi Li. She notes that velvet and corduroy aren’t the thinnest fabrics: they add extra pounds. Also, velvet is associated with antiquity, so this material is not the best choice for a woman who wants to look younger. However, the stylist believes that a velvet coat or jacket can be “tamed”: you need to wear them not with classic things, but with leather pants and a turtleneck.
