“Sputnik-1”: what you need to know about the new watch brand “Rocket”

On October 4, 1957, the world’s first artificial Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched in the Soviet Union. The data that this device transmitted to Soviet scientists helped, 4 years later, to carry out the first manned flight into space – it was made by Yuri Gagarin. This event, in turn, led to the creation in the same year of the Raketa watch, named after Gagarin’s flight into space.

The plant decided to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik-1 with the release of specialized watches. The model is inspired by the sketch of the Soviet model “Sputnik”, created by the Raketa Watch Factory in 1974. The Soviet design was reviewed and approved by the design bureau that developed Sputnik 1. The dial of the new watch is made of aluminum-magnesium alloy AMg6. It was from it that the outer heat shield was made, covering the spherical shell of Sputnik-1.

The metal dial is engraved with 24 hour markers corresponding to one full day and divided into day and night. The red circle of enamel on the second hand symbolizes the movement of Sputnik-1 around the Earth. Through the case back, you can see the self-winding 24-hour Raketa movement.

Watches “Sputnik-1” are issued in a limited series: 500 pieces. The model is also available as part of a gift set.
