Founding members of progressive rock band Genesis gathered at Air Studios in London to supervise an expanded reissue of their 1969 debut album, From Genesis to Revelation. The announcement of the reunion came in late July, with the remastered album scheduled for release on October 9.
Band members Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford agreed to return to the debut record, which features folk themes, pop sounds, and short song lengths. Guitarist Anthony Phillips also attended the meeting in London. Phillips was one of the band's original founders who departed in 1970 due to stage fright and recurring health problems.
Phillips's guitar work was central to From Genesis to Revelation, which is also known as De Genesis al Apocalipsis. The album features tracks including Silent Sun, Where the Sour turns to Sweet, The Serpent, and In the Wilderness. While the debut received favorable reviews upon release, it remains distinct from the progressive rock style that later defined the group.
Evolution of Genesis
Genesis established its progressive rock reputation starting with its second album, Trespass, in 1970. One year later, the group released Nursery Cryme, which highlighted key contributions from guitarist Steve Hackett and drummer Phil Collins.
The band continued its musical progression through the first half of the 1970s, releasing the album Selling England by the Pound in 1973. In 1975, Peter Gabriel left Genesis to launch a solo career. Following Gabriel's departure, Phil Collins moved from the drums to take Gabriel's place as the band's frontman.
With Collins as frontman, Genesis continued to acknowledge its original work and regularly performed songs from the Peter Gabriel era. The band members returned to From Genesis to Revelation to explain their early musical process leading into the 1970s, choosing to showcase the full narrative of their origins as an essential part of their musical legacy.
