A dead four-meter oarfish has been discovered on the shore of Komodo Island in Indonesia, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
The rare deep-sea specimen was spotted by a tourist who was spending the night in a tent on the beach. The unexpected arrival of the massive creature quickly caused a commotion among local residents on the island.

Oarfish spend most of their lives at depths of more than 900 meters, roughly 3,000 feet below the surface, and almost never rise to shallow waters. Because these ocean inhabitants live in the dimly lit mesopelagic zone, human encounters with live or intact specimens remain rare occurrences in marine biology.
The appearance of an oarfish on land is traditionally believed to foretell impending cataclysms and natural disasters. Japanese geologist Kiyoshi Wadatsumi has proposed a possible scientific explanation for this sinister reputation, suggesting that because the fish live close to the sea floor, they may be far more sensitive to the movements of tectonic plates than surface species. In Wadatsumi's view, this physical sensitivity is what allows oarfish to effectively predict natural disasters before they strike.
Scientific theories and previous sightings
Komodo Island is a rugged volcanic island located within Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province, situated between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. The giant oarfish, known scientifically as Regalecus glesne, holds the title of the longest bony fish in the world, with some individuals growing up to 11 meters in length. The silver, ribbon-bodied creature lacks scales and relies on long pelvic fins to navigate deep ocean currents, making its presence near coastlines a subject of intense scientific interest.
The Indonesian discovery comes after a separate incident in the United Kingdom, where a group of friends successfully saved an oarfish found in shallow water. One of the rescuers explained that the friends had jokingly given the creature a nickname inspired by the war movie Saving Private Ryan, calling their rescue mission Saving Ryan the Eel.
Coastal strandings of deep-sea marine life often draw significant attention from both local communities and researchers, as oceanographers continue to study how underwater seismic shifts and environmental changes influence the behavior of deep-water fauna.
