Green curb parking rules in the US limit stopping time

Green curbs on US streets mark short-term parking zones where drivers can stop for as little as 15 to 20 minutes under local traffic rules.

Green curbs along roads in the United States designate short-term parking zones where drivers may leave their vehicles for only a brief period, according to SlashGear.

In some municipalities, drivers are allowed to park beside a green curb for just 15 to 20 minutes. Motorists do not always notice the colour of a roadside curb, SlashGear reported, even though the paint signals strict parking restrictions that prohibit leaving a car for a long stay.

Local authorities install green curb spaces primarily in busy districts where high traffic demand requires a frequent turnover of parked cars. In certain areas, a green curb also marks a special zone reserved for dropping off and picking up school students.

Time limits and local rules for green curbs

There is no single time limit that applies to every green curb across the country. Because state and local authorities establish the specific rules for their own streets, parking restrictions vary from one community to another.

For example, SlashGear noted that a green curb restriction may operate from Monday to Saturday from 8:00 to 18:00. Outside those hours, or on Sundays, the time limit may not apply to drivers at all.

SlashGear is a US online publication that covers automobiles, consumer electronics and everyday driving regulations. In the United States, street parking rules are governed at the state and municipal levels rather than by a single national parking code. Local transport departments use painted curbs alongside posted street signs so motorists can identify curbside restrictions before pulling into a space.

Differences between green and yellow curbs

Curb colours indicate not only how long a vehicle is allowed to remain parked, but also the specific purpose of the parking space. While a green curb marks a short-term parking zone for passenger cars, a yellow curb most often designates an area for loading and unloading goods.

Yellow curb sections are intended mainly for trucks, taxis and other commercial vehicles, according to SlashGear. Cities set aside commercial loading zones on busy streets so delivery vehicles and taxis can handle cargo or passengers without blocking active traffic lanes, and those spaces can also carry time restrictions displayed on adjacent road signs.

Colour-coded curb markings are not an exclusively Californian practice, even though the system is closely associated with the West Coast state. California is the most populous state in the United States and defines curb colours in its state vehicle code, while various other US states use a similar system to mark parking restrictions, loading zones and road sections with special traffic and stopping rules.

Because rules depend on the state and municipality, SlashGear advises drivers to check nearby road signs to verify the exact time limits and active hours before parking beside a painted curb.
