Humano Seguros has awarded 20 university scholarships to students in the Dominican Republic as part of a new educational initiative.
The Excellence Scholarships program targets students with high academic performance, leadership potential and a commitment to society.
The insurance company partnered with five higher education institutions for the first edition of the scheme. The participating universities are the Santo Domingo Institute of Technology (Intec), Apec University (Unapec), the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (Pucmm), Iberoamerican University (Unibe) and the Pedro Henriquez Urena National University (Unphu).
The scheme offers academic and professional guidance, internship programs, and potential employment opportunities at Humano Seguros.
Leadership and values
Candidates were preselected by the universities through academic evaluations and aptitude tests. Humano Seguros then interviewed the students to find those who fit the company profile.
Diomares Musa, vice president of market, product and channel development at Humano Seguros, said the selection process considered academic excellence alongside leadership, values and participation in social initiatives.
She said the focus was on high academic scores, leadership attributes and a contribution to society.
Several of the successful candidates have been involved in social responsibility projects, community initiatives and foundation support, Musa said.
The scholarships are based on potential rather than being entirely tied to the socioeconomic status of the candidate, she added. Musa said potential is closely linked to integrity and the ability to generate change.
Educational expansion
The scholarship program extends the social responsibility work of Humano Seguros, which has supported vulnerable children through eight foundations for more than 16 years.
Musa said the company wanted to expand its impact into education, starting with the scholarship initiative to help train professionals who can serve society.
Eduardo Cruz, president of Humano Seguros, said education is a tool for social transformation. Speaking at an event attended by the minister of higher education, science and technology, Cruz said creating conditions for people to grow and reach their potential is part of well-being.
Carlos Mitnik, executive vice president and general manager, said support for the students will continue throughout their university careers and that the relationship begins with the scholarship award.
Strategic disciplines
The program focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, along with other areas considered strategic for the country.
Eligible degree subjects include economics, actuarial sciences, mathematics, statistics, systems engineering, computing, telematics, data science, industrial engineering and finance.
The 20 scholarship recipients are:
- Unphu: Jolimar Hernandez Castillo, Jose Albierys Reyes Cabrera, Yelitza Ramirez Mora and Nashla Marie Genao Cuello
- Intec: Cesar Castro, Laura Almeida, Yuniel De Oleo and Liz Rodriguez
- Unibe: Luisangie Alcantara Sosa, Amelia Maria Suriel Mercedes, Estrella Marie Frias Mejia and Jose Armando Pezzotti Arias
- Pucmm: Diana Brea Hernandez, Laura Patricia Marte Lacosta, Jose Angel Martin Acosta and Adriana Taveras Morales
- Unapec: Jogeysi Carrasco De Leon, Odris Paola Aquino Rosario, Branley Alberto Santana De Pena and Eva Leongina Montalvo Martinez
