Dominican singer-songwriter Gabriel Pagán has released his new album No Era El Plan in Santo Domingo, presenting a nine-track musical project that refreshes traditional merengue with modern fusions.
The artist also debuted the official music video for the title track, No Era El Plan, which is now available across digital platforms and his official channels.
The new production serves as a message of unity within Dominican music, bringing together collaborations with Manny Cruz, Ilegales, Proyecto Uno, Eddy Herrera, and La Luca to connect different generations and styles around merengue.
Origins of No Era El Plan
Speaking in an interview with reporter Severo Rivera for Dominican newspaper Diario Libre, Pagán explained that the album title reflects an unexpected creative path born from opportunities that arose naturally during production.
Pagán said that while people make plans and projects, life or God arranges things in ways that were never imagined. He noted that the title No Era El Plan, which translates to It Was Not the Plan, is an affirmation of that unexpected journey.
The album contains nine songs, with Pagán noting that each track carries its own distinct story, purpose, and underlying reason. Pagán previously released the single No Pasa De Moda as part of his ongoing musical output leading up to the new record.
Collaborations and Production Process
Pagán anchored the album on a foundational merengue base while incorporating colors and elements from other musical genres. He explained that he maintains a distinct personal code in every composition, allowing himself to be guided by feeling and intuition rather than following a rigid formula.
His creative process begins completely alone. Pagán creates 100 percent of his initial song demos independently to preserve complete creative freedom before introducing outside collaborators.
For the new album, Pagán partnered with producer Wayne Frick, who comes from a different musical background. Pagán noted that surrounding himself with collaborators who offer distinct perspectives helps reactivate and bring fresh energy to a long-established genre like merengue.
Pagán also reunited with Mike Hortel of the group Ilegales, describing Hortel as a mentor who first guided him into tropical music. The project features return collaborations with veteran merengue singer Eddy Herrera and urban group Proyecto Uno, alongside a first-time collaboration with Manny Cruz.
Recording sessions in the studio featured live musicians including Axel Mancilla and Polo Parra. Pagán stated that incorporating live elements is his favorite stage of the production process because it allows the music to evolve organically in directions he cannot predict.
Navigating the Modern Music Industry
Pagán explained that the new album represents a broader personal and professional transition intended to showcase a more inclusive, human side of his character and reduce the distance listeners may have previously felt.
The release follows a deep restructuring of his career that took nearly three years to execute. Pagán explained that managing a career across multiple international markets simultaneously proved difficult, prompting him to reorganize his business structure after previous record contracts with Sony and Top Stop Music.
Rather than taking shortcuts, Pagán opted for a longer strategic path involving joint ventures and publishing agreements. This approach allowed him to restructure his catalog and build a younger team focused on public relations, digital strategy, and production.
Addressing the broader music landscape in the Dominican Republic and internationally, Pagán pointed out that musicians must now compete directly for audience attention against social media influencers, YouTubers, and fashion bloggers.
He observed that modern digital culture has shifted the industry toward making artists behave as celebrities and entertainers rather than purely focusing on their musical craft. According to Pagán, the primary challenge facing musicians today is maintaining authenticity and their true essence while finding a balance between entertaining the public and connecting with their core audience.
Upcoming Tour and Grammy Consideration
Pagán announced plans to undertake a concert tour that will take him to various stages and venues across the Dominican Republic.
To prepare for the tour, his team is organizing an industry showcase prior to the launch. The preview event will bring together media personalities and music industry professionals to experience the project live and understand its artistic vision.
Pagán also confirmed that the album has been submitted for consideration at the Grammy Awards. He expressed confidence that the project possesses the necessary artistic quality and industry backing to earn a fair hearing.
While emphasizing that he creates music from the heart without seeking external validation, Pagán added that receiving recognition from the Grammys is always a meaningful achievement.
