The performer passed away accompanied by his wife, Carol Rosin. His family has not released the cause of death.

Although Cypher also built an extensive career in film and theatre, television accompanied him for nearly half a century. One of his earliest major roles on camera was also a major television event of the 1950s, playing the prince alongside Julie Andrews in a live version of Cinderella broadcast by CBS in 1957.

That production attracted around 107 million viewers and reached more than 60 percent of American households. The broadcast introduced an actor who had only recently started his screen career, setting off decades of regular appearances on television.

Police chief in Hill Street Blues

Cypher landed his most prominent role in 1981 on Hill Street Blues, a foundational police drama in American television. He played Police Chief Fletcher Daniels, a recurring character he maintained across all seven seasons of the series.

As Fletcher Daniels, Cypher portrayed much of the power struggles and bureaucracy surrounding the show's police officers. The role established him as one of the most recognizable figures on the acclaimed police drama.

While working on Hill Street Blues, Cypher expanded his presence across 1980s television. He appeared in Dynasty as Dirk Maurier and took part in Knots Landing, alongside roles in popular daytime soap operas such as General Hospital and Santa Barbara.

Prolific television and film career

Cypher became a regular supporting actor across decades of popular television programming. He appeared multiple times on Murder, She Wrote, alongside guest credits on Knight Rider, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Walker, Texas Ranger, and Law & Order.

Following his time on Hill Street Blues, he secured another long-running television role in the CBS comedy Major Dad. Cypher played General Marcus Craig in nearly 70 episodes, displaying his comedy range in contrast to his earlier portrayal of the stern police chief.

His work extended to voice acting in the late 1990s, when he voiced the villain Spellbinder in the animated series Batman Beyond. Cypher continued working on screen until the early 2000s, concluding his career with the series The Lot, set in 1930s Hollywood.

Stage work and personal philosophy

In feature films, Cypher was known for playing Man-At-Arms in the 1987 movie Masters of the Universe, which starred Dolph Lundgren. However, television provided his most enduring characters and made him a familiar face to multiple generations of viewers.

Beyond his screen credits, Cypher maintained an active theatrical career and performed in a dozen Broadway productions. When asked in an interview years later about the secret to maintaining such a long acting career, Cypher replied with irony that the secret was poverty. He explained that his philosophy was simple, describing acting as something he did for as long as he could keep doing it.
