Kate Middleton appeared at Balmoral alongside Prince William and their three children in a public family outing that came just days after news broke that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are returning to the United Kingdom.
The Wales family attended a service at Crathie Kirk, the church near Balmoral Castle, on Sunday, where members of the British royal family are spending their summer holiday. Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were with their parents, while the same service was attended by King Charles and Queen Camilla, along with other family members.
The appearance was not officially linked to the Sussexes' return. But the timing meant the image of Kate, William and their children took on added interest in the British press.
Some observers read it as a kind of "response" to Harry and Meghan's return, though more as a matter of symbolism than any deliberate or official move by the couple.
A United Family Image
The photograph from Balmoral arrived at a time when the relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry continues to draw heavy attention from the British press.
Harry and Meghan's return does not mean a return to royal duties. The couple are expected to resettle in Britain for a longer period along with their children, Archie and Lilibet, who are set to attend school in the country.

That makes the photograph from Scotland all the more notable. Kate Middleton made no statement about Harry or Meghan, and there was no official reference to the relationship between them. Still, the image came at a moment when attention has turned once again to the Windsor family's internal relationships.

There is another side to the story.
Sources cited by American media suggest that Harry's return to Britain could create an opportunity to gradually repair his relationship with William. People magazine cited a source saying the new circumstances could offer a chance to heal the rift between the two brothers.
The same report suggested Kate could take on a more conciliatory role. That, however, is a source's assessment rather than any position she has expressed publicly.
Against that reading, the Times analysis places more weight on the family's need to maintain its everyday functioning, and on the difficulties that could come from such an intense family dispute resurfacing in public life.
Two Readings of the Same Photograph
As a result, the Balmoral appearance has taken on two different readings. On one hand, it shows a family spending its summer days together in Scotland. On the other, it is an image captured just as the Sussexes' return to Britain reopens a chapter that had largely stayed away from William and Kate's everyday life.
The Palace has said that the royal family's gathering at Balmoral had been planned for months and was not an emergency meeting called to discuss Harry and Meghan's return.
