Katerina Stanisi Opens Up on Giorgos Mazonakis's Death

Greek singer Katerina Stanisi spoke about the death of fellow singer Giorgos Mazonakis during an appearance on the television programme "Exelixeis Tora," recalling their long artistic relationship and the moments they shared on stage together.

Stanisi, who collaborated with Mazonakis many times over the years, including on their duet of the song "S' Eho Kanei Theo," said the pair were united by their love for their audience and by the similar way each of them connected with fans.

She said many things united her and Mazonakis because they had worked together so often, and that it was painful for her to speak about how unfairly he had died so young, when he still had so much left to offer as an artist. She described him as a remarkable artist and, in her words, still a kid, adding that she did not remember anything bad about him.

Memories of their duets

Recalling their joint performances, Stanisi said they used to go out on stage together and sing duets, including "S' Eho Kanei Theo" and several other songs. She said Mazonakis communicated with audiences just as intensely as she did, describing their partnership as being like a tight fist, and said they always had a wonderful time performing together.

Mazonakis was one of Greece's best known singers in the laiko genre, building a career over several decades and collaborating with many leading names in Greek popular music. Stanisi is likewise an established figure in Greek music, with a long career built partly on stage partnerships with other major performers.

'He left for nothing'

Stanisi placed particular emphasis on the fact that Mazonakis died at what she described as a relatively young age, while, in her view, he still had a great deal to offer artistically.

She said he had died for nothing, adding that he had been going through a difficult period recently and that she believed he had died feeling sad. She said this was what upset her the most.

Stanisi spoke not only of Mazonakis as an important artist but also of the person she came to know through their collaborations, saying she would keep the memory of their joint appearances and his connection with audiences.
