King Charles III has declared he is devastated following catastrophic flooding and mudslides across Nepal and Tibet that killed at least 359 people.
More than 1,300 people remain missing across the border regions, including hundreds of foreign trekkers and mountaineers visiting the Himalayan mountain range.
Emergency response teams are continuing search and rescue operations across remote mountain terrain impacted by torrential mudflows.
Royal Message of Sympathy
In an official message signed Charles R, the monarch stated that he and Queen Camilla were heartbroken by the devastation along the border of Nepal and China. Queen Camilla is the Queen Consort of the United Kingdom, while King Charles acceded to the throne in 2022 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The King highlighted that many people in the United Kingdom maintain strong, deep, and personal ties with this region of the world. Britain shares historic connections with Nepal, including over two centuries of Gurkha military service in the British Armed Forces and a long heritage of Himalayan mountaineering.
His Majesty extended his deepest sympathy to everyone who had tragically lost loved ones in the disaster. He added that he deeply shared the intense anxiety of families who are waiting for news about missing friends and relatives.
King Charles also paid tribute to emergency workers who lost their lives during response operations. He said his thoughts were with the families of police officers and armed forces members who died while courageously performing their duty in service to others, and he expressed deep gratitude to all rescue workers who responded selflessly.
Concluding his message, the King stated that his special thoughts and prayers remain with everyone affected. He confirmed that the United Kingdom stands ready as always to provide assistance and support to those in need.
Mounting Casualties and Missing Trekkers
According to figures released by Nepal's emergency management agency, 823 people remain unaccounted for within the country. Of those missing in Nepal, 517 are foreign nationals.
Across the border in China, official reports indicate that 558 people are missing in the Tibet region, including 260 foreigners. Chinese state media have not provided details regarding the nationalities of those foreign citizens.
Combined data from both countries puts the overall number of missing persons above 1,300. The confirmed death toll has reached at least 359 across the affected mountain zones.
Remote Himalayan Search Operations
The catastrophic flooding occurred in one of the most isolated zones of the Himalayas. The Himalayan range forms a natural barrier separating the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau, an autonomous region in western China.
Nepal is home to eight of the world's fourteen highest mountain peaks, including Mount Everest. Each year, large numbers of hikers and climbers travel from around the world to trek through the region or attempt an ascent of Everest.
The heavy presence of international visitors explains why so many foreign citizens are listed among the missing. Authorities are continuing efforts to gather information from remote valleys where mudslides have cut off road access and disrupted communications.
