Brown, a senior lecturer in strength and conditioning at the university, said classic torso raises from a lying position are an ineffective way to train abdominal muscles. He explained that the main load during lying torso raises shifts to the hip flexors. Performing them regularly increases the risk of injury and provokes chronic lower back pain, Brown said. He added that the exercise remains popular due to outdated training methods rather than scientific data.

To safely build a flat stomach, the scientist recommended static and stabilizing exercises instead. He advised doing planks, the farmer's walk, the suitcase carry, and the bird-dog. Brown noted that Pilates and yoga also help strengthen core muscles, which tightens the abdomen and forms a base for defined abdominal muscles.
