Late British singer Liam Payne would have turned 33 years old on Saturday, August 29, 2026, after achieving worldwide fame with the boyband One Direction.
Payne, who was born in 1993, died at the age of 31 on October 16, 2024, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Before his death, he built a music career that expanded beyond his teenage rise to prominence into solo work and international collaborations. His death prompted global tributes from fans who viewed the musician as both an idol and a friend.
Payne first became widely recognized for his work in One Direction between 2010 and 2016. He originally auditioned for the British television talent contest The X Factor in 2008, but judges eliminated him because they considered him too young.
He returned to the show two years later in 2010. During that season, judges and producers suggested he form a vocal group alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan, creating what became One Direction.
One Direction Success and Chart Records
The group stood out throughout the competition and finished in third place. In 2011, the band released their debut studio album, Up All Night, which featured hit singles including What Makes You Beautiful, One Thing, and Gotta Be You.
One Direction released five studio albums in total during their time together. In 2014, they became the first group in history to have their first four albums debut at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. In May 2014, the band traveled to Brazil for three live performances in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
The singer featured on major group hits such as Night Changes, Story Of My Life, and Perfect. Payne also co-wrote several of the band's tracks, including Taken, Everything About You, Same Mistakes, Last First Kiss, Back For You, and Summer Love.
Solo Career and Final Releases
Following the group's disbandment in 2016, Payne launched his solo career and pursued collaborations with prominent music industry artists, including British singer Rita Ora and American electronic trio Cheat Codes. He released his debut and only solo studio album, LP1, in 2019.
Payne never performed a solo concert in Brazil. He had been scheduled to play in São Paulo at The Town music festival in 2023, but was forced to cancel his appearance due to health problems. His final musical release, the single Teardrops, arrived in March 2024.
