Tasca da Esquina has just acquired a branch in Pinheiros. It’s not on the corner and it’s far from being just any tavern, the kind you go to to eat cod fritters, grilled sardines and spend little. The home of Portuguese chef Vítor Sobral and Brazilian restaurateur Edrey Momo is one of the best and most awarded Portuguese cuisine restaurants in the city, which has been successful since opening in Jardins 13 years ago, and is now expected to multiply in São Paulo and in other Brazilian capitals.
Vitor Sobral is a talented and energetic cook. He has published 24 books and runs a total of eight restaurants: Lota da Esquina, Tasca da Esquina and Taberna da Esquina, in Lisbon, and four units of Padaria da Esquina there; in São Paulo, in addition to the headquarters, there are Tasquinha, in Jardins and Shopping Morumbi, and the recently opened branch in Pinheiros. He’s an authority when it comes to codfish – who doubts the knowledge of a guy who published a book called ‘As Minhas Recipes for Codfish – 500 Recipes’ (in Brazil published by Editora Sena)?
Sure, its restaurants have cod: the branch’s menu, just like that of the parent company, currently offers six recipes, from cod à Braz, with chips and egg (R $159), to the debutant roasted cod loin with cream onions, breadcrumbs, potatoes and parsley (R $ 159). All punctual, all balanced.
But Tasca’s menu goes well beyond cod and I think you should take advantage of the visit to the new house to be daring. Those who dare not try anything, suggest the section that has sardine fillet, roasted tomato cream and red onion pickles on rustic bread (R$69); and even cod flakes with caramelized onion emulsion, candied potatoes and fried egg (R$74), among other signature dishes.
Among the novelties are two delicious marinades: tuna fillet in light brine, avocado, red onion and watercress sprouts (R$89) and octopus salad, cassava, coconut, vegetables, ginger and chives (R$119). And how about a masada? It’s the Portuguese version of “macarronada”. In this case, the pasta comes with tomato sauce and roasted peppers, squid, prawns and slices of fish on top (R $ 99). Ah, Casa de Pinheiros also has a tasting menu. Put yourself in the hands of the chef with 5 portions (R$199) or 7 portions (R$239).
Tasca da Esquina de Pinheiros, Rua dos Pinheiros 436. Tuesday to Friday, 12:00 to 15:00 and 19:00 to 23:00. Saturday lunchtimes until 5pm and Sunday lunchtimes only between 12pm and 3pm.
