The revelry is over: 6 tips to detoxify the post-carnival body

With the end of Carnival it is important to know: excesses generate an overload in the bodies responsible for processing and eliminating toxins

If you enjoyed Carnival and you are entitled to drink too many drinks and eat fatty foods, it’s time to take care of your body, which is already under the effect of the accumulation of toxins, harmful substances that generate the formation of free radicals, that is, highly reactive molecules that “attack” the cells of the body.

Claudia Changdoctor and postdoctoral in Endocrinology and Metabology at the USP and member of the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology (SBEM), explains that free radicals cause oxidation, that is, they consume available oxygen, interfering with the body’s metabolic processes .

“There is an overload on the organs responsible for processing and eliminating these toxins, such as the liver, kidneys and intestines, compromising the entire functioning of the body. For this reason, after days of excess, we feel swelling (due to of liquids), the skin loses strength, fatigue comes with everything and immunity decreases”explains Claudia Chang.

6 tips that will renew your post-carnival body

Moisturizes more than usual

After Carnival, drinking lots of water during the day becomes the rule. Juices, coconut water and tea are also recommended (prefer green tea, boldo and lemon balm), but they must be natural. Industrialized ones are high in sodium, dyes, flavors, and other substances that will sabotage your detox.

“It’s worth remembering that drinking plenty of water also stimulates kidney function and, consequently, urine production, which is where excess fluid, sodium and toxins will be eliminated.”Chang points out.

Consume dark green leafy vegetables

Broccoli, spinach, chicory, and kale, as well as bitter greens like arugula and watercress, are important sources of fiber that help cleanse the body, improve digestion, and reduce the absorption of fats and toxins.

Bet on nuts, seeds and grains

These provide a greater intake of vitamin E (with antioxidant action) and omega-3 (fatty acid with anti-inflammatory power). Furthermore, they offer minerals such as calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese and selenium, essential for the balance of the body’s biochemical reactions. Among these are almonds, chestnuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, walnuts, pistachios, chia seeds, wheat, barley, oats, rye, sunflower seeds and flax seeds.

Invest in the right fruits

Fruits rich in water and low in calories, such as watermelon and melon, restore lost hydration. “Oranges, pineapples and apples can be effective because they contain enzymes useful for draining impurities, promoting liver renewal”says Claudia Chang.

Resume your sleep routine

After so many days of revelry, it’s time to readjust your biological clock. “It is during sleep that the body works to balance the various functions of the organism. A good night’s sleep regulates the body’s metabolic and hormonal processes, as well as having a tonic function by eliminating toxins and strengthening the immune system”Chang points out.

Strengthen skin care

the plastic surgeon Louis Matzmember of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP), which also deals with non-invasive aesthetic procedures, suggests doubling down on skin care after Carnival.

Stresses that excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages causes dehydration of the skin and accelerates aging, as it decreases tissue oxygenation and increases the production of free radicals.

“To metabolize one molecule of alcohol, the body needs to give up nine water molecules. Since there aren’t enough water molecules for hydration, the body starts removing it from the skin, leaving it dehydrated and lifeless.” .”explains Luís Maatz.
