Once again, Brazilian cheeses have achieved international recognition. TasteAtlas, a food guide that collects and evaluates foods from around the world, has created a ranking of the 100 best cheeses on the planet, and three Brazilian cheeses have made the list.

Serra da Canastra cheese ranked 12th, ahead of renowned Italian and French cheeses, such as mozzarella and gruyere. Coalho cheese ranked 39th and Minas cheese 94th.

The cheeses are rated from 1 to 5 based on reviews from users, chefs and experts from around the world. Canasta cheese received a 4.7 rating and barely managed to make it into the Top 10.

The Top 10 saw the participation of 8 Italian cheeses. First place was Parmigiano Reggiano, an Italian cheese from the Parma region. Serra da Estrela cheese, considered the “cousin” of Canastra, ranked fifth, representing Portuguese cuisine.

It is not the first time that Canasta cheese has been recognized by international awards and rankings. In 2022, TasteAtlas itself elected Serra da Canastra cheese as the best cheese in the world, an achievement that has led to the celebration of several rural producers and government bodies in Minas Gerais.

The Minas Gerais delicacy is made using raw cow’s milk in the towns of the Serra da Canastra region. In 2008, the cheese was considered an Intangible Cultural Heritage by IPHAN, an institution of the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN).

Besides being delicious, Canasta cheese is versatile and makes for several delicious dishes. Pasta, sandwiches, salads – cheese goes well with everything.
