Cases of severe covid-related respiratory syndrome are high in 16 states, Fiocruz points out

The bulletin highlighted an increase in registrations after a period of decline. In São Paulo, the high reaches all age groups

New Infoflu bulletin Fiocruz released this Friday, 3, indicates an increase in cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) from covid-19, after a period of decline. The growth is especially significant in St. Paulwhere it reaches all age groups. The data is based on epidemiological week 8, from February 19 to 25, the period that covers Carnival.

InfoGripe coordinator Marcelo Gomes reiterated the importance of joining the vaccination campaign started this week. Gomes stressed that, in the case of priority groups, boost the vaccine at this stage of growth in cases of COVID-19 it is essential to prevent a possible contagion from turning into serious cases and deaths. In most states, the increase occurs among the elderly.

“The signal starting in the elderly population reflects that the virus may be regaining strength, increasing its transmission,” he said.

The trend, according to him, is for the virus to reach other age groups in the coming weeks. Gomes defended the use of masks as a form of prevention, despite Anvisa’s decision last Wednesday to suspend the mandatory use of masks at airports and on planes.

“It’s a purely physical matter: good masks, which fit well on our faces and have adequate air filtration, are a barrier to the passage of the virus,” he said. “By using good masks, a healthy individual is not exposed to the absorption of viruses from the environment.”

Of the 27 federal units, 16 have shown an increase in SARS cases in the past six weeks: Alagoas, Amazonas, Amapá, Bahia, Ceará, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Piauí, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro , Roraima, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. In Amazonas and São Paulo, the increase occurs in virtually all age groups.

Eighteen of the 27 capitals show signs of growth in the same period: Aracaju (SE), Belém (PA), Boa Vista (RR), Campo Grande (MS), Cuiabá (MT), Curitiba (PR), Florianópolis (SC), Fortaleza (CE), Goiânia (GO), Macapá (AP), Maceió (AL), Manaus (AM), Palmas (TO), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Salvador (BA), São Luiz (MA), São Paolo ( SP) and Teresina (PI).
